It is subdivided into 100 cents.<\/p>\n<p>The Hong Kong Monetary Authority is the governmental currency board and de facto central bank for Hong Kong and the Hong Kong dollar. Under the licence from the Monetary Authority, three commercial banks including HSBC issue their own banknotes.<\/p>\n<p>There are currently 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollar denominations in circulation. All of the issued banknotes circulate within Hong Kong only. The name &#8220;dollar&#8221; came from Spanish silver dollars which were introduced into China via Manila during the Manchu dynasty. <\/p>\n<p>The Hong Kong dollar has a long and interesting history, dating back to the 19th century when the colony of Hong Kong was first established. Back then, the currency was pegged to the British <a href=\"https:\/\/finseta.com\/ca-en\/pound-sterling\/\">Pound Sterling<\/a>, and it remained pegged to the pound until 1967 when the Hong Kong government implemented a link to the <a href=\"https:\/\/finseta.com\/ca-en\/us-dollar\/\">US dollar<\/a>. The HKD currently uses a linked exchange rate system which pegs the HKD to the USD in the range US$1:HK$7.75\u20137.85.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, the Hong Kong dollar is one of the most traded currencies in the world, and it is an important part of the city&#8217;s economy.<\/p>\n<p>The Macau Patacas is pegged to the Hong Kong Dollar at 1 HKD: 1.03
