Currency Profile

Swiss Franc

The Swiss Franc is the official currency of both Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

It is also one of the four major currencies used in the European Union. (The others being the Euro, the Swedish Krona and the Danish Krone.)

The Swiss franc was first introduced in 1850 as part of the Swiss Federal Constitution. It replaced a variety of local coins and notes that were in circulation at the time. The franc was initially pegged to gold, but this peg was abandoned during World War I.

The currency is known for its stability and is considered a safe haven currency in times of economic turmoil, much like Switzerland in general.

The Swiss franc is one of the top ten most traded currencies in the world. Most days hundreds of billions worth are traded.

The Swiss Franc is also one of the most expensive currencies, often ranking alongside or above the Euro and US Dollar
